Knitwear brands leaving a genuine sustainable impact
Updated: May 22, 2022
When looking at how companies are approaching sustainability, it is hard to weed out those who greenwash from those who are genuinely taking strides to reduce their impact on the earth.
I've compiled a few knitwear specific brands that I believe are making impactful, sustainable decisions for their companies:
Deima Knitwear
Started in 2017, Deima Knitwear is a small, slow fashion brand based in Denmark. With ethical hand-knit production and natural, locally sourced yarn, Deima is fostering an environment for quality, long lasting products that can be cherished for generations.

The Knotty Ones
Founded in Lithuania in 2014 by three friends who recognized the lack of contemporary, sustainable knits in the market, this brand's star quality is their empowerment of craftswomen. They employ local women in Lithuanian villages and small towns, who are mostly stay-at-home moms. They work with these women to create flexible work-from-home schedules to integrate their craft with their lives.

HERD
This knitwear brand was founded in 2020 and strives to "revive and reenergize the traditions of sheep farming for wool in England, and to do so locally and naturally". HERD sources their fleeces from farms in Lancashire, Yorkshire, and Cumbria; and keeps their wool completely natural by eliminating the use of toxic chemicals and dyes. Their products are grown, processed, made, and finished within 150 miles of their farms.
